ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages)

The ESOL programme at Ashburton Borough School aims to integrate the English language and literacy across curriculum areas, which is essential for students’ success in all subjects. There is also a strong emphasis on the development of bi/multilingualism and literacy as a key contributing factor to academic achievement.
Our ESOL team provides English language support for over 50 students at Ashburton Borough School. Developing reading, writing and communication skills is fundamental to our students and our teaching support team uses evidence and goal-based planning to cater for their needs.
The literacy ESOL programme is closely monitored throughout the year and adaptations are made to meet the needs of students. Your child may also be receiving additional help in the classroom.
Our staff are dedicated to sharing and celebrating cultural differences within classrooms and across the school. Cultural days, huis and class presentations provide opportunities to recognise and value our cultural diversity.

The ESOL programme is facilitated by a teaching support network of skilled and highly motivated practitioners.

Our ESOL programme consists of the following :

Support within the classroom for reading, writing, speaking, and listening throughout the year, including inquiry-led learning.
Students attend extra lessons that support their language development in speaking and listening.
Extra-targeted teaching is provided for students who have been identified as having a specific learning need.
