ABS is pleased to be able to offer many opportunities to our whānau and tamariki. These encompass areas of growth through academics, social skills, hauora and experiences new to many tamariki in our kura (school).
EOTC - Education Outside of the Classroom - We are fortunate to be able to offer camp experiences to our year 5 - 8 students. These often change based on the year group and the cohort in front of us. Our year 5 start with Noho Marae, an overnight camp at the Hakatere Marae. Our year 6-8 spend 2-3 nights away in a variety of places which has included Mt.Cook, Glentanner, Tekapo, Living Springs, Wainui, Raincliffe, and more. Camp allows students to develop many skills not found in the class, but also backs skills learned in school. Tamariki are able to:
concern for the environment
Academic opportunities - ABS offer the opportunity for students to participate in various academic competitions. These include the CAM assessments (at a cost to families), Sanford and Kāhui Ako Science Fairs, EPro8, Aoraki Maths Challenge and others that are offered both online and in person.
Arts Programs - We offer a variety of arts opportunities to our students across the school including LDA School Dance Challenge, school choir, Kapa Haka, Jump Jam groups, specialist Art classes and cultural celebrations. We also have a music tutor who takes small group and individual instruction for guitar and drums (at a cost to families).
Sport Programs - ABS have many clubs come into our kura to pass on some skills to our tamariki for numerous sports such as hockey, cricket, netball, miniball, machine pitch softball, touch etc.
We also have our own sports teams for rippa rugby, netball and miniball and are happy to support our tamariki to find clubs for other sport.
ABS works closely with Sport Canterbury to include Healthy Active Living as part of our curriculum. This also allows us to partake in several sport events throughout the school year such as Swim Sports, Cross Country, Winter Tournament and Athletics.
Sport option is very popular with our senior school, focusing on a range of sport, including mountain biking, futsal, fitness acceleration and health. We also incorporate opportunities for our senior boys and girls to participate in the Boxing for Champions program once per week.
