LAP (Literacy Assistance Programme)

A specific 1:1 reading programme aimed to enhance student’s literacy ability, modelled on the Reading Assistance Programme successfully run in Dannevirke.
This programme entitles selected students to one to one reading with a trained tutor, for 30 minutes, three - four times a week. |

The programme consists of:
- Reinforced and instructional reading.
- Sight word and word attack skills.
- Inference and evaluation skills practice - comprehension.
- Dictation and spelling skills
- Sixty daily sessions (2 school terms of thirty minutes, 1-1 tutor.
- Instructional reading, phonics, spelling and dictaion.
- Programme derived from a combination of reading recovery and the MultiLit reading tutor programme.
- Targeted at children with needs in literacy aged seven to thirteen years.
- Regular progress checks (Running records)
Steps to Literacy is an intensive 'catch-up' course and is designed to achieve an increase of at least 3 years in reading/spelling age over the period of a year's tution.
Remedial Literacy course for learners with reading/spelling ages of between 7 and 10
- Four pupil workbooks.
- Use with Wordshark (specialist software programme) to provide extra reinforcement.
- Supporting game and activity materials.
Running records are completed regularly to assess progress.

On Monday 15th November, Ashburton Borough Rothbury, ELC hosted Rangitata MP, Jo Goodhew. Jo observed LAP, spoke with students and asked questions about this highly successful programme.

| The results show the effectiveness of the one to one Literacy Assistance Programme. Reading levels / ages of all participants in the programme have increased ( Range 3 – 15 levels, PM Benchmark/ Reading Recovery Levels) Word attack skills have shown significant improvement as measured by the pre and post tests as has sight word knowledge for the children that needed development. Nine out of the 11 children are now reading at or
close to their chronological age. |
