Enrolment Reception and Orientation teacher
English language learners will need to enrol at least a day before starting school to enable the Principal and ESOL teacher to arrange support for the student. The Principal will interview the parents/ family.
During the interview with the family the Principal will in addition to normal enrolment procedures:
- Check passports and photocopies to verify status. (Photocopy for school use)
- Ascertain language spoken at home and gain information about the child’s fluency and needs in their first language and an indication of whether child will qualify for ESOL funding, or benefit from ESOL provision.
- Arrange for the family to meet ESOL personnel.
- Complete the ESOL Supplementary Enrolment Form with the ESOL teacher.
- That children start classes one week after initial interview and contact with the school for the purpose of ensuring ESOL support is in place.
Assessment - Initial and Ongoing
Following enrolment students will be assessed to identify their language needs and past educational experience.
Ongoing assessment will be conducted twice a year ( June / November) for ESOL funding in addition to routine class assessment. Assessments include:
- Record of Oral Language.
- Record of Spoken Language.
- Sequencing task.
- Analysis of Vocabulary Range and sentence structure.
- High Frequency words.
