English for speakers of other languages

ESOL programmes at Ashburton Borough School are provided to help

Non English Speaking Background students to learn to communicate confidently in English and support students in the mainstream curriculum.
The amount of time a student will be in a programme will vary with need.
Ashburton Borough School values communication with students families and afternoon tea or lunch meetings are scheduled regularly.

 

The students' first language is also valued as well as the cultural aspects that the students bring to Borough School.

 

ESOL  programmes are planned in consultation with classroom teachers.   The topics make links to classroom programmes with general input where necessary.
Teachers include multiple opportunities for authentic language use, in their planning.

 

1- Provisions for ESOL support:
Home and community links will be fostered. Parents will be kept informed

 

as      necessary by classroom teacher and if appropriate ESOL teacher.  

2- Professional Development:  Opportunities will be made available to upskill staff.

3- Resources:  A budget is provided for ESOL resources.

4- Record Keeping: Ministry documentation will be completed in June and November of each year in addition to routine classroom assessment.
