ENGLISH as an additional language

Ashburton Borough School  recognise the importance of maintaining each child’s first language and cultural background so that children have a safe and supportive environment in which to learn.


Learners of English as an additional language will be secure in using their first language(s) in the school situation and will be encouraged to maintain theirfirst language(s) both written and spoken where practicable.

  

  

The presence of multicultural and multilingual students with their wealth of experiences is a positive asset.  It provides opportunities for appreciating different values and expectations and for additional cultural dimensions to be included in all curriculum areas.

 

Ashburton Borough School ensure bilingual students can participate fully in classroom activities and develop appropriate support programmes to ensure that they are able to participate fully in classroom activities.

 

Language learning is promoted within an interactive classroom environment.
Language objectives are included in all curriculum areas and teachers will identify the key vocabulary and language structures to scaffold the teaching of the new learner of English.


The variety of cultures within our school will be reflected within the physical environment (bilingual labelling, displays from different cultures, children’s work).
Ashburton Borough School consider the provision of interpreters for families at critical times where possible.


Additional support is provided for students who are beginning learners of English.
Staff development is ongoing and include professional development for key personnel.
